Indian Clothing:

India has been always famous and liked for its wonderful dresses and costumes with lots of variations in dressing styles. One can easily see variations of style according to different geographical regions and religions. Clothing here show a large variety of colors and texture. Use of vibrant and bright colors has always been a point of attraction for foreigners.

Traditional wears of women include Ghaghra Choli, Saree and Salwar Kameez. In Indian subcontinent saree is treated as female garment which is a long length of unstitched cloth with various patterns printed on them. Saree is the most graceful ethnic outfit worn by Indian women and is draped over body in various styles.
Indian men’s wear includes Dhoti, Kurta and Lungi. Even today many of the village people can be seen in their traditional dresses.

The Pre Times:

Cotton was among the most used fabric for cloth in India and India was first to grow cotton even in times of Harappa culture. Saree among women became popular in Aryan period and Vedas also has mentioned its use at 600 BC.

Persian clothing fashions influenced India around 1000 AD with Islamic invasions. The influence was more prominent among North Indians and both men and women included trousers with long tunic till knees in their clothing wardrobes. The trousers were called churidar and women wore these with a long veil or scarf over it.

Women Clothing Styles: Silk sarees were popular among wealthy women while others mostly wore cotton sarees. Different draping styles of saree were used according to functional area and geographical places. A common style included wearing saree like a skirt with top part covering upper body and head. Working women gave it a style of pants by pulling them between their legs. Women employed in army used to tuck top part of saree in back to free their arms for fighting.

Men Clothing Styles: Traditionally men used dhoti for wearing which was also a piece of long unstitched cloth like saree but shorter in length. Men wrapped dhoti around their legs and tuck them to give it style of pants like working women. Among men turbans were also very popular which is a long cotton cloth wrapped around their heads.
