Vast natural reserves, scenic beauty and rich cultural heritage – when it comes to  discussion about India then these are the three criteria come to mind first. India, one of the largest sub-continents of South Asia has a population of over one billion. This democratic country is also one of the fastest growing economies in the present day world.

If we take a look back to the history of the country then, no doubt, it will come to know that Indian society has always been patriarchal. In societal life of the country there have been male dominance in every aspect, where still now, women find their identity linked with their father or husband. In this country, the concept of male superiority is so deeply penetrated  into the Indian minds that it is passed on unconsciously, and lays the foundation for inequality.

In India, for centuries, birth of daughter brought nothing but distress and dismay to majority of the Indian family. Because, a lion share of people suffered from a ’son-fixation’ mentality, with a desire of a son to carry on the family name. But with the commencement of 21st century, a touch of modernization has added in the Indian society. Now to some extent scenario has changed, especially in regards of women. In the present times, women are receiving formal education and even seeking employment and treated no less capable than men.

Poverty has always been associated with India. Its eradication is truly crucial for the elevation of the status of Indian women. But, the country’s history bears that whenever women have been empowered, they have changed the events for the better.

This is very true that still now, Indian society is treated as one of the culturally-rich and religiously diversified society of the world. The elegance of Indian society has been admired by people of all over the world.
